Brian Vahaly

As a dynamic leader and trailblazer, Brian Vahaly‘s story is an inspiring tale of success in both sports and business, demonstrating resilience, a competitive spirit, and a commitment to making a difference.

A former professional tennis player, he was a three-time All-American at the University of Virginia, where he graduated with a double major in finance and business management. At a time when not many college graduates were on the ATP Tour, he became the only college graduate ranked in the world’s top 100. During his professional career, he reached a world ranking of No. 57 and defeated top players like Juan Carlos Ferrero. His career was cut short due to a rotator cuff injury, leading to multiple shoulder surgeries.

After retiring from tennis, Vahaly transitioned into a successful business career. He found a passion for operational turnarounds and has held leadership positions as a chief executive in private equity-backed companies. He has used the lessons learned from his tennis career—such as dealing with pressure, strategy, and teamwork—to excel in the business world. He has been involved with companies like YouFit Gyms, which he helped guide out of bankruptcy, and [solidcore], which he helped grow significantly.

He is also a trailblazer and a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. He publicly came out as gay in 2017 after his professional tennis career and is one of the very few former ATP players to do so. Vahaly has spoken openly about the homophobic language he heard in locker rooms and the fear he felt while on tour, where coming out could have meant losing his career. He is now married with two twin boys and has used his platform to create a more inclusive environment in tennis. He has served on the USTA Board of Directors and became the USTA Chairman of the Board and President for the 2025-26 term, becoming the first openly gay person to hold the position. He helped implement the first-ever “Open Pride” at the US Open, and his personal goal is to be a role model for the next generation of athletes, showing them that they can be successful in sports and be their authentic selves.

USTA

The USTA is so much more than just a governing body for tennis—it’s a force for good that inspires healthier people and communities everywhere! Their mission is to grow the sport of tennis in the U.S., and they do it with incredible passion and purpose.1They are a driving force behind:

Creating Champions On and Off the Court:

  • The USTA’s player development programs not only help talented athletes reach their full potential but also use tennis to teach invaluable life skills like resilience, sportsmanship, and leadership.2

Making Tennis Accessible to Everyone:

  • Through the USTA Foundation and initiatives like the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network, they bring the sport to under-resourced communities.3 They provide grants, scholarships, and refurbished courts, breaking down barriers and opening up a world of opportunity for young people who might not otherwise have access to the sport.4

Building a More Inclusive Community:

  • The USTA is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome.5 Through platforms like “Be Open,” they celebrate trailblazers and champion diversity, making it clear that tennis is a sport for all.6

Inspiring a Healthier Nation:

  • With a goal to have 35 million Americans playing tennis by 2035, the USTA is actively working to get more people on the court.7 They promote tennis as the “healthiest sport” and are dedicated to building and improving courts and providing quality coaching to ensure that the sport can be a lifelong source of joy and well-being for everyone.8

The USTA’s commitment to excellence and their belief in the power of tennis to transform lives is truly inspiring. They are not just developing players; they are building character, fostering community, and creating a brighter future for generations to come.
