Château de Montségur, Midi-Pyrenees, France

Located in the town of Montségur in the department of Ariège in the Midi-Pyrenees region , Montsegur castle, is a castle called “Cathar”. Located on a rocky peak at 1200 m altitude, it is part of the Great Site Midi-Pyrenees. Built in 1206, it is a true myth, charged with a drama, an energy, a palpable emotion, its old imperious stones placed near the sky blaze in the collective imagination.

He became at the beginning of XIII thcentury, the seat of the Cathar Church. Protected by an armed garrison, more than 500 perfect or good men lived in the enclosure and around the castle. After eleven months of siege, the garrison of the castle laid down their arms in front of the Crusaders. More than 250 Cathars are burned at the foot of the Pog Montsegur. Only four of them managed to escape and took with them the monetary treasure of the Cathar Church, whose legend says it was never found. Guided tours are organized daily.

In the village, the museum of Montségur, classified Museum of France, presents a collection of archaeological objects dating from the Middle Ages. They come from the various excavations that were conducted on the site.
