The Rt Hon John Healey MP

John Healey is a British politician who has served as Secretary of State for Defence since July 2024. A member of the Labour Party, he has been the Member of Parliament for Rawmarsh and Conisbrough, previously Wentworth and Wentworth and Dearne, since 1997. Healey served under Tony Blair as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Adult Skills from 2001 to 2002, as Economic Secretary to the Treasury from 2002 to 2005, Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 2005 to 2007, and under Gordon Brown as Minister of State for Local Government from 2007 to 2009 and as Minister of State for Housing and Planning from 2009 to 2010

It is an honour to have been asked to serve as Secretary of State for Defence and to have the chance to work with our Armed Forces and civilian defence staff. The first duty of the Government is to keep the country safe and protect our citizens. We are proud of the professionalism and dedication of those serving the UK, both in and out of uniform. In this new era of threat, challenge and instability, this government is fully committed to strengthening our Armed Forces and setting out a clear path to 2.5% of GDP on defence. This government’s commitment to NATO is unshakeable, as is our commitment to the nuclear deterrent. We will cooperate closely with allies and partners to protect the values at the heart of our democracies.

Secretary for State for Ministry of Defence

The Secretary of State for Defence has overall responsibility for the business of the department. Responsibilities include:

  • strategic operations and operational strategy, including as a member of the National Security Council
  • Defence planning, programme and resource allocation
  • strategic international partnerships: US, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, NATO
  • nuclear operations, policy and organisations

National Cyber Force

The National Cyber Force (NCF) is a partnership between defence and intelligence. It is responsible for operating in and through cyberspace to counter threats, disrupting and contesting those who would do harm to the UK and its allies, to keep the country safe and protect and promote the UK’s interests at home and abroad. In addition to GCHQ and the Ministry of Defence, the Secret Intelligence Service and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory are core partners bringing cutting edge espionage and research techniques.
