
Ambassador Dr. Thomas Oberreiter is the Austrian Permanent Representative to the European Union, a position he has held since September 2023. Born on July 3, 1966, in Linz, Austria, he grew up in Hagenberg im Mühlkreis. Oberreiter studied law at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1992, and completed his studies at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna in the same year.
Throughout his career, Oberreiter has served in various diplomatic roles. He began his career in the Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs, working in the Middle East and EU departments. From 1998 to 2004, he served as a counselor at the Austrian Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels, where he was involved in financial negotiations related to the EU’s Agenda 2000.
He also served as the Austrian Ambassador to Luxembourg from 2011 to 2015. From 2015 to 2017, he was the envoy to the Permanent Representation, and in 2017, he became an ambassador in the Committee of Permanent Representatives I (COREPER I), which he chaired during Austria’s presidency of the Council of the EU in 2018. Dr. Oberreiter has been deeply involved in various high-level negotiations and has served as the head of cabinet for Austrian Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein and later for Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg
