Having overcome severe dyslexia in his youth, he went on to earn a PhD and work as an aid worker in Eastern Europe, helping vulnerable children affected by war. His work with charities, including leading a youth unemployment charity, gave him a deep understanding of the challenges facing people and businesses. Elected to Parliament in 2015 to represent Hove, he has since served in a number of key shadow roles, including Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary and Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology.
In a recent cabinet reshuffle, Peter Kyle was appointed the new Secretary of State for Business and Trade, as well as the President of the Board of Trade. He takes over from Jonathan Reynolds and moves from his previous role as Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology. This promotion is a huge vote of confidence in his ability to tackle some of the most critical issues facing the UK economy today. Peter’s appointment is a thrilling new chapter, where he will be responsible for shaping the nation’s economic strategy, driving growth, and securing vital trade deals. With his unique background in community development and a proven track record of ministerial experience, he brings a fresh and dynamic perspective to this crucial role!

The department will support investment, unlock exports, and open up new markets through trade deals, with joined-up offers of support to UK businesses operating both at home and abroad. The Department for Business and Trade brings together the business focused functions of the former Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department for International Trade (DIT).
