Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park, Chapada dos Guimaraes, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil
The Chapada dos Guimarães National Park, established in 1989, is located in the State of Mato Grosso. The Park covers an area of 33,000 hectares in the municipalities of Chapada dos Guimarães and Cuiabá, housing the largest sandstone cave in Brazil.
Stage of a fantastic landscape, the Park reserves attractions for all tourists. Marine fossils found by archeologists prove that millions of years ago the entire region was covered by an ocean.
One of the main attractions of the Brazilian cerrado, it has enormous sandstone formations, scenic overlooks in a wide variety of environments, canyons with up to 350 m in height, and many waterfalls – due to the rich hydrography and sudden changes in altitude.
The park is part of the basin of the Upper Paraguay, protecting headwaters of the Cuiabá River, one of the main tributaries of the Pantanal.
