
Ambassador Shigeo Yamada is a seasoned Japanese diplomat currently serving as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United States, a position he assumed in December 2023. Born on July 17, 1964, in Tokyo, Yamada pursued his higher education at Keio University, where he earned a BA in Law in 1987. He furthered his education at Carleton College in Minnesota, graduating with a BA in Political Science in 1989.
Yamada’s diplomatic career began in 1986 when he joined the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His first international posting was as a Second Secretary in Washington D.C. in 1989. Over the years, he has held various significant positions, including Minister for Political Affairs at the Japanese Embassy in Washington from 2012 to 2015 and Deputy Minister for Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo from 2019. He also played a crucial role as Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, contributing significantly to Japan’s presidency of the G7 in 2023.
Yamada’s extensive experience includes assignments in London, Beijing, and roles in the National Security Secretariat in the Prime Minister’s Office. His diverse roles have given him a broad perspective on international relations, emphasizing the global partnership between Japan and the United States
