Birmingham Snow Hill is a railway station in Birmingham City Centre, England. It is one of the three main city-centre stations in Birmingham along with Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Moor Street. Snow Hill is the northernmost of Birmingham’s three city-centre stations, located around the corner from Birmingham Cathedral and a few blocks from the west side of Birmingham University’s main campus. Once a much grander station, for decades it competed directly with New Street, only losing the battle when the main line into New Street was electrified. Snow Hill was closed in 1972, but revived less than ten years later, and got a new building in 1987.
Today most of its services are local ones on the Snow Hill Lines, serving cities and commuter towns to the south of Birmingham: Worcester, Kidderminster, Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull are its major destinations, with hourly services onward to London Marylebone. Sadly Snow Hill’s ornate 1912 building was demolished in the 1970s, but a few period touches remain: look out for an old entrance on Livery Street, and – most unusual – a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it memorial to an old station cat. It’s a colourful square tile near the ticket barriers.
